In thermal spraying, the operating parameters are to be capable of being set without the repeated cost-intensive and time-consuming examination of the spray layers. For this purpose, the particle speeds and the melting state of the spray particles (Sp) are determined at the site of the coating at least approximately and then optimised by correspondingly setting operating parameters. The coating of the workpieces is carried out using this setting. In order to determine the particle speeds, a laser anemometer is used whose measuring volume (Mv) can be adjusted in relation to the hot gas stream. The density of the particle stream is determined by means of a particle counter (Paz) which counts the number of spray particles (Sp) flying in each case through the measuring volume (Mv). The average particle trajectories (Pfb) and the melting state are calculated in a device for digital data processing (ED). <IMAGE>
