The hydrant has a pillar which exhibits a standpipe connection and contains a vertically adjustable valve rod. A shut-off valve is present at the lower end of said pillar, which valve exhibits a water-pipeline-side valve seat, with an axial seal seat surface and a valve body which is acted upon by closing forces. The valve body is guided with limited vertical displaceability on the valve rod and can be pressed by said rod, in the region of an axial seal surface, against the seal surface of the valve seat. In order that the hydrant is tightly connected in a reliable manner to the water pipeline, even in the case of a pressure compensation of the pillar interior, a further radial seal surface, which tapers on the water-pipeline side, is present in addition to the axial seal seat surface, and the valve body exhibits a radial seal bead which engages with said radial seal seat surface even before the closure of the axial seal.
