In a pyrometer, in which for the measurement of the temperature of a body the influence of the atmosphere is compensated, the speed of measurement is increased to such an extent that measurements can be made in real time, in that the dependence of the transmission of the atmosphere upon an absorption index is stored in the memory (Sp), in that an arithmetic mean of the transmission values computed for various wavelengths is employed as transmission, and in that an operator (Op) is provided, which can compute the absorption index from the factors determining the atmospheric transmission, namely air humidity, measurement path length, air pressure and air temperature, and in that the measured temperature value is corrected in an amplifier (V) in accordance with the transmission ( tau ) of the atmosphere which corresponds to the adsorption index determined by the operator (Op). The invention is suitable for the non-contact measurement of the temperature of objects which are spatially distant from the measuring system. <IMAGE>
