COMBINATION LOCK

In a combination lock in which character wheels 10 are engageable in different relative angular positions with locking wheels 9 for setting the lock to different combinations, and wherein each wheel 9 has an opening 11 in which a locking tang 12 on a locking slider 8 is engageable when the correct combination has been set to allow the slider to be moved by a manual actuator to release the lock, each wheel 10 has a shaft part 14 which projects through an opening in a front plate 1' of the casing of the lock, an annular flange 16 the front face of which is in contact with the inner surface of the plate 1', a central recess 17 accommodating a shaft part 18 of an associated wheel 9 which is spring loaded away from base plate 2 of the casing and, concentric with the recess 17, catch recesses 19 in the rear surface of the flange 16; each wheel 9 has projecting forwards from the front surface thereof, catch noses 20 which are engageable in the recesses 19. As shown, the tangs 12 normally engage the edges of the wheels 9 when the lock is fastened, the bolt 6 being engaged in a hasp, and turning of the wheels 10 to cause the correct numerals thereon to appear in windows in the plate 1' brings the recesses 11 of the wheels 9 into alignment with the tangs when the slider 8 may be moved against spring bias by an actuator to disengage the bolt and hasp. To set the combination, the lock is released and with the slider held in the retracted position thereof the wheels 10 are rotated so that the noses 20 engage in any of the recesses 19 to give the desired combination. Positive positioning of the wheels 10 is effected by a doublearmed leaf spring engageable with notches around the rims of the flanges 16 of the wheels.
