PURPOSE:To prepare D(-)-beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid, by treating isobutyric acid or/ and methacrylic acid with a cultivated fluid of a microorganism belonging to the genus Wingea, etc. or a suspension of the microbial cell thereof. CONSTITUTION:A microorganisum, belonging to the genus Wingea, Choanephora, Zygorhynchus or Aspergillus, and having the ability to convert isobutyric acid or methacrylic acid into D(-)-beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid, e.g. Wingea robertsii IFO- 1277 or Choanephora circinans HUT-1324, is cultivated in a nutrient culture medium. The resultant culture or a suspension of the microbial cell is then made to act on the isobutyric acid or methacrylic acid or a mixture of both at a pH of 6.0- 9.5 to collect the D(-)-beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid from the reaction solution. |
