A sealed lead-acid secondary cell of the type that absorbs oxygen at the negative electrode, has an improved safety valve. In one example a porous member (2) impregnated with a liquid substance, such as oil, is disposed within or outside of a safety valve, or in contact with the bottom of said safety valve (1). In another example the safety valve (1) is completely submerged in oil (2), and in a still further example two or more safety valves (1, 2) of rubber, are connected in series.
