A nuclear reactor arrangement including a reactor vessel which has areas exposed to high energy neutrons emanating from a nuclear reactor core mounted within the reactor vessel, includes shield panels provided with canisters mounted between the reactor vessel and the nuclear core in regions where the reactor vessel is exposed to high rates of neutron flux and a substance consisting essentially of a heavy metal and hydrogen being disposed within the canister.
