PURPOSE:To prepare (+)-alpha-hydroxymethylbutyric acid by treating(+ or -)-alpha-methyl- butyric acid with microorganisms belonging to Trichosporon genus. CONSTITUTION:(+ or -)-alpha-Methylbutyric acid is converted to (+)-alpha-hydroxymethyl- butyric acid by the aerobic cultivation of microorganisms belonging to Trichosporon genus, e.g. Trichosporon fermentans CBS2529 strain, in a medium containing + or -- alpha-methylbutyic acid at 4.0-9.5pH. As an alternative method, (+)-alpha-hydroxy- methylbutyric acid is prepared by culturing the above microorganisms in a nutrient medium at 4.0-9.5pH, adding (+ or -)-a-methylbutyric acid to the cultivation liquid or the suspension of the microorganisms obtained from the liquid, and reacting under aerobic conditions keeping the pH at 6.0-9.0. |
