PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity and yield, without using a hardly available catalyst nor leaving unreacted raw material, by the vapor-phase oxidation of 1,2-propanediol in the presence a silver catalyst having specific particle size under a specific temperature condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced oxidizing 1,2- propanediol with a molecular oxygen-containing gas at 400-480 deg.C in the presence a silver catalyst having particle diameter of <=2.5mm. The amount of the molecular oxygen is preferably 0.7-2.0mol per 1mol of 1,2-propanediol. Any kind of crystalline silver can be used as the catalyst in the above reaction provided that the particle diameter is <=2.5mm, however, a crystalline silver prepared by electrolysis is preferable. The above raw material and the molecular oxygen are preferably diluted with >=5mol of inert gas (based on 1mol of the raw material) before the reaction. The gas produced by the reaction is cooled quickly after passing through the catalyst layer. |
