PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound in high yield by the vapor-phase oxidation of 1,2-propanediol, economically in an industrial scale, without using a hardly available catalyst, by contacting 1,2-propanediol with powdery silver having specific particle diameter. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by the vapor-phase oxidation of 1,2-propanediol with molecular oxygen in a system diluted with inert gas, in the presence of a silver catalyst having particle diameter of <=0.1mm, at 400-600 deg.C. the reaction gas is cooled as fast as possible after leaving the catalyst layer. The powdery silver having particle diameter of <=0.1mm is produced by electrolysis or by chemical means (e.g. alkali precipita tion). It can be used as it is or by adding to crystalline silver of >=0.1mm diame ter in an amount of >=5wt%. A copper mesh, etc. may be used in place of the silver particle, however, an iron-based alloy which acts as a catalyst poison is inadequate to the purpose. |
