<p>The fabric for a brassiere is knitted on a flat weft knitter. The knitting is two dimensional from a median line taken through the two cups. Approaching the peak of a cup the knitting is increased to the left and stitches inclined to the left of the median line, and the stitches to the right on the right of the median line. After the peak, those on the left are decreased to the right towards the median, and the stitches on the right decrease to the left. This gives the form to each cup. The straps and connecting pieces are knitted before and after the cups respectively. Also the bottom edge can be knitted straight to form part of a corset. The cups can be patterned with lace work (petinet) or tuck stitches.</p> |
