Absorption of maleic anhydride into water - from gas mixture

Maleic anhydride esp. obtained by gas phase oxidation of benzene butadiene etc., is absorbed into water or aqs. soln. in a column divided into exchange surfaces between which are movable valve plates in a cage (e.G. Flexitrays T9 (RTM)). This achieves more efficient absorption of maleic anhydride than with conventional columns packing and the rapid stiring ensures that solids do not block the column. The pref. shape of the openings, Venture profiles, reduces the pressure drop, permitting smaller and cheaper equipment.
