Gas, water and oil flowing out of an oil/gas well on a sea bed is collected using a vertical column which is lowered over the well to receive the oil/gas mixt. An oil column is built up in the column with an upper gas-filled portion. Oil and gas may be discharged from the column via respective outlets. The column may be operated at sea depths greater than 300 metres and in shallow water where it may be constructed as part of a platform. The interior of the column may be provided with horizontal webs which act as dampers to the upward motion of the oil/gas mixture. Oil and gas are separately transferred from the column to the sea surface for further treatment.
