PURPOSE:To obtain the short carbon fiber chip, having specified bulk density and angle of repose, good in bundling property and prominent in dispersibility into matrix, by a method wherein the short carbon fibers are bundled by employing a binder whose principal constituent is solid epoxy chemical compound having a specified molecular weight. CONSTITUTION:The objective short carbon fibers are obtained by bundling several hundreds - several millions pieces of long carbon fibers, for example, by impregnating the binder having the principal constituuent of epoxy chemical compound (bisphenol A type epoxy resin or the like for example), having the molecular weight of 600-5000, solidified in room temperature and having the melting point of preferably 60 deg.C or more, cutting into the length 1-10 mm usually, and providing with the properties of epoxy compound content of 0.1-10 weight %, the bulk density of 300 g/l or more and the angle of repose of 50 deg. or less. Said binder is preferably emulsion type and polymer of polyester resin, acrylic resin or the like, surface-active agent or the like may be contained in accordance with necessity. |
