The present invention relates to a method for detecting the break of a warp yarn on a weaving machine and to a device for carrying out this method. This device comprises at least one light source 31, 32 for emitting at least one optical signal 35, 37 along each row of healds carried by a healed frame, this source being arranged so that the signal is interrupted when at least one heald is in the position occupied when the warp yarn is broken, and a detector 33, 34 arranged to detect such an interruption of the signal. This device is advantageous in that it makes it possible to avoid installing lamellae for the detection of breaks. <IMAGE>
