The control device comprises, in a manner known per se, a gas jack 6 articulated at one end to a chassis 1 and at the other end to a backrest 4, the jack 6 being controlled by a control member 12. According to the invention, automatic locking means comprising a bolt 18 passing through an upright 17 of the chassis 1 and acting on the control member 12 by means of a washer 24 are provided. The bolt 18 is returned upwards by a spring 21 and is held embedded by the seat cushion 2 when the latter is in the seat position. <IMAGE>
