In a luminous display device, luminous fields in a particular pattern appear when a voltage is applied. In order to achieve a very low overall height and ease of fabrication, there is arranged, on an areal substrate 1, a first electrode configuration 2 onto which a luminescent layer 17 comprising a dielectric with electroluminescence phosphor is applied. Applied to the luminescent layer 17 there is a second electrode configuration 18. One of the layers 2, 17 or 18 has the form of the pattern. The other layers cover this pattern. At least one electrode configuration is transparent. <IMAGE>
