In a method for piecing a yarn on a spinning unit of an open-end friction spinning machine, before the return of the yarn end the V-shaped nip of two rollers arranged next to one another is exposed by moving away a cover-like component. The cover-like component carries the yarn draw-off channel, into the output orifice of which the yarn end required for piecing is introduced and is subsequently returned so far that it projects out of the inlet orifice of the yarn draw-off channel. The yarn end is then grasped and transferred into the region of the V-shaped nip. When the spinning unit is closed by moving the cover-like component back, the spinning unit is ready for the subsequent actual piecing operation.
