The present invention describes an electrode for fitting in resistance spot welding machines, in particular in welding robots, with which the forces occurring during the welding operation in the electrode can be reliably determined. To this end, a special electrode measuring shank is used which has in the tip area a part tapering in diameter. Four wire strain gauges orientated parallel to the electrode axis and having a peripheral spacing of 90 DEG are attached to this part. These wire strain gauges are connected to an indicating or analysing device so that the size of the axial force, the transverse force and the absolute force as well as the angle of application of the absolute force can be calculated.
