The steam iron, equipped with a sole plate which can be electrically heated in a controllable manner and which has an evaporation chamber, possesses a grip arranged at a distance above it and a water tank located above the sole plate. Water is fed from this water tank by way of drip-feed valve at the bottom of the latter to the evaporation chamber. At the same time, the drip-feed valve comprises a valve needle which is spring-loaded in the closing direction and which can be transferred via a regulating handle into continuously selectable opening positions and into a closing position. To increase the ease of operation, especially during lengthy ironing operations, the valve needle can be brought into and out of the closing position, independently of the actuation of the regulating handle, by means of a separately actuable catch device. The catch device is designed as a pressure mechanism has a pressure tube which engages with guide noses into control grooves of a sleeve shank and which, via a shift sleeve of a force accumulator loading the supporting sleeve, presses against a stop limiting the control grooves in the sleeve shank.
