By a process and a plant for indirect sludge drying, in particular for drying effluent sludges, the sludge being, if required, mechanically dewatered and/or preheated, a solution is to be created by which, on the one hand, low-grade energy can be utilised for drying and, on the other hand, pollution of the environment is avoided. This is achieved in terms of the process in that the drying is carried out on the sludge side at reduced pressure, the reduced pressure being generated by removing the vapours by suction using an injection condenser, and in terms of the plant by a barometrically adjusted injection condenser, downstream of which in the direction of gravity is arranged a mechanical sludge predrier, and by at least one indirect sludge drier having a gas-tightly encapsulated sludge chamber, the gas dome of the sludge chamber being connected via a line for removing the vapours by suction to the injection condenser. <IMAGE>
