PURPOSE:To enhance the purification capacity and durability of a catalyst, by arranging a plurality of monolithic catalysts in series so that the catalytic component of each monolithic catalyst is supported in an amount larger in the outlet side thereof as compared with the inlet side thereof in the flow direction of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:A monolithic catalyst A(platinum support amount 0.5g/l), the same B(platinum support amount 1.0g/l) and the same C(platinum support amount 1.5g/l) are prespared. The monolithic catalysts A, B, C was received in a catalyst container 10 from the inlet side of exhaust gas toward the outlet thereof in the order of the monolithic catalyst A, the monolithic catalyst B and the monolithic catalyst C. These monolithic catalysts 11 are arranged so as to be spaced apert by 5mm from each other and to shift mutual cells thereof. The movement of these monolithic catalysts 11 is limited by retainers 12 in the axial direction and by seal materials 13 and cushion materials 14 in the radius direction. |
