A vehicle automatic transmission (1) has a torque converter (10) and a multiple-stage gear mechanism (20). When the vehicle is stopped and the shift lever (53a) is in the D-range, the gear mechanism is shifted to the higest gear stage if the vehicle brake (B) is engaged and the engine (2) is idling, so that transmittal of the engine idling vibrations to the vehicle body can be prevented by the transmission.
