Apparatus for finishing or joining a surface of a lens with a finishing tool. The apparatus comprises a principal frame, a shaft mounted pivotably on the principal frame and eccentric transmission means which cause the shaft to function with a predetermined orbital movement. The means for finishing the lens are secured in a fixed manner to one of the shafts. A lens holder is mounted slidably on the principal frame in order to effect an alternating movement along a path perpendicular to the orbital geometric axis of the shaft. The lens is mounted removably in the carrier device and will be forced by a thrust device against the tool for finishing the lens.
