beta-Carboline derivs. of formula (I) are new (where R4 = Me, Et or CH2OMe; R5 = H, OR8 or CH2OR9; R8 = 1-4C alkyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl, 4-7C cycloalkylalkyl, propynyl or cyclohexenyl; R9 = 1-4C alkyl; R6 = H, OR10 or CH2OR9; R10 = branched 1-4C alkyl or 3-6C cycloalkyl; provided that R5 and R6 are not both H; R5 is not iPro when R4 is H; and R5 is not iPrO or CH2OEt when R4 is Me). - 3 Cpds. (I) are specifically claimed e.g. ethyl 4-methoxymethyl- 5-ethoxymethyl-beta-carboline 3-carboxylate and ethyl 4-methoxymethyl- 5-cyclobutoxy beta-carboline-3-carboxylate.
