A flat-bed knitting machine has knitting needles moving longitudinally in needle tricks of a needle bed, which have each a stitch forming part 12 including the needle head 14 and an initiating part 13 including the needle butt 16. The needle parts 12, 13 are interconnected by means of a coupling device 22 suitably in the form of a lever with arms 27,33 respectively engageably by cam elements on the carriage for coupling and decoupling the needle parts. The arrangement is such that the part 12 is decoupled after the needle has knitted or as not to be subject to additional camming movements with part 13 which might damage the stitch or needle.
