PURPOSE:To detect contact between a grinding wheel and a work, by detecting the work vibration to be produced when the work ground, due to rotational vibrations of the grinding wheel in time of its contact with the work, in an electrical manner. CONSTITUTION:A vibro-detecting sensor (for example, a sensor provided with a piezo-element) 6 is set up in a work 1 or a setting table 5 supporting this work in advance. When a grinding wheel 2 comes into contact with the work 1, this work gets vibrating on the basis of grinding by means of rotation of the wheel 2. When the sensor 6 detects this vibration, an output signal is generated out of the sensor 6. And, this output signal continues to be generated for the duration that the grinding wheel remains in contact with the work 1. In this connection, no matter what the wheel 2 and the work 1 are of conductivity or not. Therefore, this output signal is detected whereby mutual contact between the wheel 2 and the work 1 is detectable.
