1368074 Azetidin - 2 - ones BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 7 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3883/71 Heading C2C Novel azetidin-2-ones of the general formula wherein X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an optionally substituted amino group; Y is a hydrogen atom or, when X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a halogen atom; R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a -CR<SP>4</SP> = C(CH 3 ) 2 group, in which R<SP>4</SP> is -COOH or a salt, ester, thioester or amide group derived from it; and A is (i) a group, in which R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl group and R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or carboxylic acyl group, or (ii) a -SO-CH 2 Z group, in which Z is as R<SP>1</SP> above, are prepared (a) when A is (i) above in which R<SP>2</SP> is an acyl group or (ii) above, by reaction of the corresponding compound in which A is a -SCH 2 Z group with a compound of the formula Pb(O-acyl) 4 ; (b) when A is (ii) above, by oxidation of the corresponding compound in which A is a -SCH 2 Z group; (c) when A is (i) above in which R<SP>2</SP> is an acyl group, by reaction of the correspondingly compound in which A is (ii) above with an acid anhydride; and (d) when A is (i) above in which R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom, by mild hydrolysis of the corresponding compound in which R<SP>2</SP> is an acyl group.
