The subject of the present invention is a process for obtaining composite materials from celluloses and/or starches, in particular from recycling. To a mixture of these of raw materials, there is added a calcium hemi-hydrate, calcium carbonate and optionally at least one additive for adjusting the density to obtain a primary mass. Various ingredients are then added to the said primary mass and it is subjected to thermal, physical and chemical treatments. The materials obtained are used in particular as absorbent products for industrial or domestic use, or as a filler, in particular for plastic materials.
