The winch has a housing with an end cover secured by bolts Within the housing is a drive motor with a stator, windings and a rotor. The motor shaft and the winch shaft are supported in three ball bearings. The chain carrying the load hook is coupled to a drive wheel. Motion is transmitted to the drive wheel from the shaft via a reduction gear box and a coupling. The gear box is secured to the housing by fixing bolts. The end of the drive shaft carries a friction braking system controlled by electromagnetic actuators. Hall effect sensing of a magnetic rotor allows velocity detection signals to be provided as an input to a microprocessor based controller. The motor is controlled to provide speed control within limits.
