Apparatus for the heat treatment of finely divided inorganic matter, consisting of two walls of circular cross-section and of vertical axis, which are arranged concentrically so as to form a vertical passage, of annular cross-section, in which the matter to be treated travels from the top downwards by gravity while the treatment gases travel therein from the bottom upwards. To improve the thermal efficiency of this apparatus, the outer wall 10 carries baffles 26 inclined downwards from the periphery towards the centre and extending over a considerable proportion of the width of the said passage 14, these baffles being arranged so as to force the gases to follow a helical upward trajectory in the said passage, which comprises an intermediate zone 24 devoid of baffles and equipped with a device 28 for injecting a fuel into the said passage 14 tangentially in the direction of flow of the gases, the upper part 20 of the said passage forming a preheater, and the lower part 22 of the passage forming a cooler. <IMAGE>
