For the careful drive of a ceramic support roller for roller hearth furnaces, use is made of an intermediate drive element in the form of a swivel part made of metal which is provided at the driving end with slots for positive coupling to the drive and has at the driven end a longitudinally slotted clamping part which fits into the support roller and the circumferential parts of which can be spread open by an internal tightening screw with a conical head and transmit the torque to the support roller by frictional connection.
