For welding work, in particular build-up welding, which requires a high purity of the material introduced, it is proposed to add calcium and/or calcium compounds to the weld pool and to subject the protective gas atmosphere covering the weld pool to a superatmospheric pressure that exceeds the vapour pressure of the calcium at the melting point of the base material. In this way the contents of undesirable impurities such as oxygen, sulphur, arsenic, antimony, tin, phosphorus, nitrogen, lead and bismuth can be greatly reduced, whereas desired contents of chromium, nickel, manganese and silicon remain almost unaffected.
