Synergistically acting combinations of benzoic acid, para-hydroxybenzoic acid esters, salicylic acid, sorbic acid and/or formic acid and derivatives thereof and pyruvic acid or salts thereof have been disclosed as antimicrobial agents by the present invention, which compositions can be employed as preservatives in foods and luxury foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and everyday necessities in order to eliminate the negative effects of the said preservatives without impairing their preserving action.
