A protective helmet, in particular for motor cyclists, whose chin strap consists of two strap portions which are attached to the helmet and can be connected by means of a fastener whose fastener parts which can be released from one another are mounted on the free ends of the strap portions, of which one is longitudinally adjustable and which have on their inside in each case a padded strip which is attached to the helmet and/or the part of the strap portion which is adjacent to the helmet. For simpler handling of the protective helmet when putting it on, the padded strips of the strap portions are attached in each case to the assigned fastener part so that, when the chin strap is fastened, they abut one another and the padded strip of the longitudinally adjustable strap portion has an elastically stretchable portion.
