For the auxiliary brake (11) of a trailer connected to a traction vehicle, a braking signal is produced which is derived from the main braking system (8) of the traction vehicle. For this purpose, a control unit (19) containing a computer (38), as well as a characteristic line memory are provided. The latter stores the braking force characteristic line of the traction vehicle. From the braking pressure sensor (16', 16") of the main brake the control unit receives signals which represent the relevant braking pressure, and the computer produces a braking signal for the additional brake (11), such that the braking force of the additional brake (11) is the same as the braking force of the rear axle (3) of the traction vehicle. When a tare sensor (19) is used which determines the additional loading of the trailer it is possible to take account also of the empty weight and additional loading of the trailer when the ideal braking force is being determined.
