The appliance has a band support (4) for overlapping band parts (6, 8) of the band to be attached around an article. A holding device (10) is provided with a pressure jaw (44) which can be pressed against the band support (4) by means of a drive device, in order to retain the lower band part (6) on the band support (4). The holding device (10) is combined with a band-tensioning device (12), the two preferably being arranged on a common movable apparatus part (34). A tension roller (68) cooperates with a support (42) of the band-tensioning device (12), in such a way that, with an increasing band tension, the pressure jaw (44) is retained on the band support (4) with an increasing pressing force. <IMAGE>
