An automatic teller machine displays at a CRT display (7) a guide message "Out of Money" (and "Depress the cancel button") or "Request Cannot Be Processed" (and "Depress the cancel button") at the time of withdrawal and deposit transactions when a given transaction is or becomes invalid. When a customer depresses the cancel button in accordance with the guide message, a card or passbook is dispensed. When the customer does not depress the cancel button within a predetermined time interval, the card or passbook is retained by the machine.
