The temp. of the water in the drainage bed (1) is brought up to around 4 deg. C, i.e. the temp. at which water is at its heaviest. Thus the water sinks downwards through the underlying water layer at a higher temp. and drains away. This means that the underlying water layer can commence to replace that drained away, but after cooling to approx. 4 deg. C, this also sinks downwards and drains away. The equipment used includes an evaporator in the form of a hose or pipe coil over the surface of the bed, a condenser and a compressor. The evaporator heat absorption can be controlled by adjustment of the compressor speed. A temp. indicator is positioned in the bed, producing a signal corresp. to the bed temp. and this signal activates the compressor via a control so that the bed temp. is maintained at around 4 deg.
