Oxygen, or a gas contg. oxygen, is used as a carrier for CaC2 and possibly other oxidisable substances and/or alloying elements, and/or materials forming slag; and the gas is blown onto or into the molten iron, but esp. via tuyeres in the base of a converter. Technical- or eutectic CaC2 may be used, the pref. amt. being 5-125, esp. 30-60 kg CaC2/tonne molten iron, the CaC2 possessing a grain size of 0.001-20, esp. 0.01-1.0 mm. The CaC2 is pref. added stepwise during refining and/or according the the melt temp. The CaC2 is pref. fed pneumatically via CO2 or CO to the lance head and mixed in the head with a stream of oxygen. As compared with conventional refining methods, more than 30% scrap can be added to the converter.
|
