To control the starting or restarting of two data transmission equipments (A, B), which are to be connected, or are connected, to each other in each case via a modem unit (MOD), and which are each connected, having devices transmitting/receiving data signals via a transmission control unit (DUE) at their appropriate modem unit (MOD), a special control signal is used which, in the data transmission equipment receiving this signal, is used for setting an in particular adaptive equaliser. In at least one of the two data transmission equipments that are connected or to be connected, in the case of loss of synchronisation, an adjusting signal is transmitted to the other data transmission equipment only during a predetermined time interval.
