Described herein are craboxylic acid amide compounds or carboximide compounds represented by the general formula: < IMG > wherein Z represents a group of the formula: (1 ) or a group of the formula: (2) < IMG > wherein A constitutes along with two carbon atoms respectively represented by .alpha. and .beta., a group of the formula: a group of < IMG > the formula < IMG > , a group of the formula: < IMG > a group of the formula: < IMG > a group of the formula: < IMG > , a group of the formula: < IMG > , a group of the formula: < IMG > , or a group of the formula: < IMG > , and denotes a single bond or a double bond; and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts; processes for the production thereof; and medicines containing the same. The compounds are useful as treating, preventing and improving agents for diseases attended with cerebral dysfunction as well as various symptoms caused by the said diseases.
