The invention relates to the field of production of catalysts and, in particular, relates to a block of a granular promoted iron oxide catalyst for the synthesis of ammonia, and a process for the production thereof. The block of a catalyst has the following composition in % by weight: granular promoted iron oxide catalyst 87.0-96.4 alkali metal aluminate 3.0-6.0 filler (dust of a granular promoted iron oxide catalyst having a dispersion rate from 0.01 to 0.5 mu m, or clay mineral or product of thermal treatment of the clay mineral or various combinations of the fillers listed above) 0.1-6.0 reinforcing elements 0.5-1.0. The production process of the block of the catalyst comprises mixing a granular promoted iron oxide catalyst with an aqueous solution of the alkali metal aluminate having a density from 1.49 to 1.6 g/cm<3> and a filler, moulding the catalyst composition prepared while introducing reinforcing elements thereinto, and subjecting the moulded catalyst composition to thermal treatment at a temperature from 300 to 600 DEG C. The invention can be used in the production of ammonia.
