A compact electromagnetic flowmeter unit that may be interposed between flanged ends of upstream and downstream line pipes, the unit being compressed by the flanged pipe ends to effect a fluid seal. The flowmeter comprises a non-magnetic metal spool (10) of high strength whose inner surface is covered by an insulating liner (11) to provide a flow conduit. Surrounding the spool (10) and concentric therewith is a cylindrical housing fabricated of ferromagnetic material and formed by complementary half-pieces (12U, 12I) which include end plates (22, 23) that join the corresponding ends of the spool (10) to define an annular inner chamber. Adjacent the inner surface of the half-pieces (12U, 12I) at diametrically opposed positions along a coil axis (Y) normal to the longitudinal flow axis (Z) are relatively thin coils (15, 16) shaped to conform to this surface. Electrodes are supported on the spool (10) at diametrically-opposed positions along an electrode axis (X), normal to this coil axis (Y). The inner chamber is filled with a potting compound. |
