In an apparatus for the biological purification of waste water in a reactor 1 having a feedline 2 for the waste water to be treated, having a discharge line 3 for treated waste water, if required, a feedline 4 for activated sludge and having a gas input device 5 equipped with a gas feedline 8 for feeding an oxygen-containing gas, support elements 10 are provided as a colonisation surface for microorganisms. In order, in such an apparatus, to be able to ensure in a simple and economical manner a high oxygen input and an intensive mass transfer, the gas input device has at least one gassing element 5 furnished with gas through-holes 7 having a diameter of from 3 to 25 mm and having a number of the gas through-holes in the range from 4 to 100 per 100 cm<2>. <IMAGE>
