In a process for heat treating metallic workpieces, the workpieces are subjected in a furnace 1 to a gas atmosphere essentially containing hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen. While the furnace doors 2 are being opened, combustion gases are burnt in the region of the furnace openings in order to prevent entry of air into the furnace interior. For a simple and economical mode of operation of the burner 13 assigned to the furnace doors 2, an exhaust gas line 4 of the furnace 1 is connected via a transport device 7 to the burners 13. As a result, the exhaust gas of the furnace 1 is at least partially utilised as combustion gas for combustion in the region of the furnace openings. <IMAGE>
