The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for forming individual portions of tobacco at predetermined points of a circulating conveying means, especially a pocket wheel, to which tobacco particles are fed in a continuous stream in a feeding region. The invention consists in the fact that the point provided in the feeding region to receive a portion of tobacco (portion point) is driven at a lower speed in an unchanged stream of fed tobacco particles. As a result of this, the quantity of tobacco which does not reach the portion points, e.g. recesses, (excess tobacco) is reduced in relation to the tobacco reaching the portion points. <IMAGE>
