Bitumen is produced from underground deposits of heavy oil sands by injecting air mixed with a heating fluid, in particular steam and/or hot water, and an alkalising agent into the deposit. The temperature of the deposit is thus raised to 93-177 DEG C and a part of the bitumen is thereby oxidised to form crude oil acids which, together with original crude oil acids, are neutralised to form emulsifiers. A bitumen/water emulsion is then recovered, which is separated above ground and from which the bitumen is produced. An enhanced efficiency of the process is obtained by means of a varying pressure load on the deposit.
