For the sandwich formation of flat workpieces, such as is required, in particular in the clothing industry when fixing upper materials with inlays, it is difficult to carry out the placing-together automatically with the aid of suitable devices for picking up and setting down if the piles of workpieces available on the input side for this operation are stacked in a different way. This is the case, for example, for upper materials which are placed in each case with the same sides on one another for better cutting in layers. In order to be able to place workpieces with such a "doubled" stacking together with workpieces which are placed in each case with different sides on one another automatically likewise using commercially available devices, it is proposed to avoid the turning of every second workpiece in one of the two piles by alternately firstly placing a workpiece of a first type on a workpiece of a second type and secondly placing a workpiece of a second type on a workpiece of a first type. <IMAGE>
