1373858 Flameproofing textiles MONSANTO CO 6 July 1972 [7 July 1971 (4)] 31744/72 Heading DIP [Also in Divisions Cl and C2] Cellulosic material is rendered flame retardant by treatment with the acid or ester forms of a compound of the general formula: wherein (a) R 1 , R 2 , R 4 and R 5 are like or unlike groups selected from -CH 2 P(O)(OR 6 )(OR 7 ) (II) or -CH 2 C(O)OR 6 (III) wherein R 6 and R, are like or unlike and are selected from H, a metal ion, an ammonium or alkylammonium ion or a carbon-linked organic group, R 3 is C 1 -C 20 alkyl or a group of formula (II) or (III), X and Y are selected from H and alkyl, n is an integer from 1 to 15 and m is an integer from 1 to 20 with the proviso that at least one of the groups R 1 , R 2 , R 4 and R 5 is a group of formula (II) and at least one other of said groups is a group of formula (III). An example is given in which a swatch of undyed cotton cellulose is submerged in a CCl 4 solution of various esters of the above general formula for 5 minutes and is then withdrawn, dried in an oven for 15 minutes at 80‹C and then further heated in the oven at 150‹C for 10 minutes to give a flame-retardant material.
